Is Instrumental Soothing Music Better?

Author: admin  //  Category: Arts, Entertainment and Music

There are many kinds and forms of soothing music. One general way though to divide compositions designed to relax is to group them according to instrumental tunes and those with vocals. Is it always a better option to listen to purely instrumental selections like solo piano music when you want to relax?

Obviously, opinions regarding soothing tunes vary because not everyone shares similar preferences. There are really a lot of individuals who have a liking for fast paced pop compositions. This is what calms them. You may be in the same boat on this one but do consider that there are some good reasons why instrumental sounds are best for relaxation.

One reason why tracks without vocals are ideal is because they heighten the subjective experience. Those that do have lyrics tend to control the experience based on the themes that they pursue. In other words, listeners’ feelings, emotions and thoughts are generally dictated by whatever the vocalist says.

There may be no real problem if the lyrics of songs that have the potential to fall under the category of relaxing soothing music carry appropriately calming words. In a lot of cases though, there are songs that carry traditionally slow beats that may be calming but have lyrics that may generate the opposite effect in individuals. Instead of feeling calm, an individual may end up feeling overly melodramatic or even depressed.

There are more reasons to choose instrumental sounds for relaxation. One more good reason is the natural ability of certain instruments to evoke relaxation. The piano, flute or harp for instance, when played following a slow beat piece, automatically generates smooth, calming tunes that almost mimic what nature produces. You definitely get this impression when listening to soothing piano music. You would probably not be able to expect the same outcome from an electric guitar even if it is played to accompany slow pop tunes.

The piano, flute and other similar instruments are also logical choices because they can set up the right conditions for visualization. Putting on an instrumental track can transport you to a situation or atmosphere that is soothing. Solo piano music for instance can help you imagine that you are in the middle of a cool forest or that you are sitting on top of a hill. It can help you think of whatever location you find comforting. Lyrics can’t help you imagine freely because the meaning behind the lyrics tend to set your imagination for you in advance.

There are many online and offline stores that sell soothing music. Some of the most commonly bought selections fall under classical or jazz. There are now a number of contemporary artists however who specialize in creating music just for relaxation. This is actually fast becoming a lucrative field for the musically gifted. This is because a lot of professionals feel the need to relax after having had to cope with the fast pace of modern life. This is why musicians now sell recorded pieces to help people relax. There are many sample records that you can listen to before you choose albums.

There’s no stopping you from using soothing music with words. If you feel though that you want to have a more unique listening experience, you might want to give instrumental sounds a shot. They’re very good fodder for the imagination.
